How to pronounce -ed in the Simple
Past
In the Simple Past we
add -ed to regular verbs. Be careful pronuncing the verbs:
1. verbs ending in -ed preceded by a voiceless consonant [p, k, f, ʃ,
ʧ, s, θ] → speak [t].
Example: I stop – I stopped [stɒpt]
Example: I stop – I stopped [stɒpt]
2. verbs ending in -ed preceded by a
voiced consonant [b, g, v, ʒ, ʤ, z, ð,
l, m, n] or a vowel → speak [d].
Example: I clean – I cleaned [kli:nd]

3. verbs ending in -ed preceded by [t] or [d] → speak [ɪd].
Example: I visit – I visited [vɪzɪtɪd]

Boris wakes up quite early. He looks at his watch. It is a quarter to seven. Boris jumps out of bed and runs to the bathroom. He has time to take a cold shower only. He is in a hurry.
At the railway station he meets three other boys from his group. They
all have small backpacks and fishing rods.
In less than
an hour they get off the train at a small station near a wood. They walk very quickly and soon find themselves on the shore of a large lake. The boys spend the
whole day there fishing, boating and swimming.
They return home late at night, tired
but happy.
